If you're coming to Guanacaste with kids, stay on the calm-water beaches of the north coast, not in the surf towns. The stretch around Playa Potrero, Flamingo and Conchal, and the Papagayo Gulf beaches around Playa Hermosa, have gentle water, short drives and an airport transfer of about an hour. We chose Playa Potrero, and after years of family trips here, we'd choose it again.
Which part of Guanacaste is best for kids?
The big decision is calm water or surf. Tamarindo, Avellanas and Nosara are surf towns, and their waves can be too much for little ones. The beaches facing the bays are much gentler. Around Potrero that means Potrero itself, Flamingo, Brasilito and Conchal. Further north, Playa Hermosa, Playa Panamá and Ocotal on the Papagayo Gulf are good too.
Travel time matters as much as the beach. Both areas are about an hour from Liberia airport (LIR), so you're not starting the holiday with a four-hour drive and a car full of tired kids.
Why we chose Playa Potrero
We first came here for Christmas with our own two kids, and it's still where we bring them. Here's why:
- The beach is calm. Playa Potrero is an easy swimming beach, and the sailing club rents kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear.
- It's quiet, but not too quiet. Potrero is a small, local town. Flamingo, with its marina, restaurants and sunsets, is five minutes away. Tamarindo is about 30 when you want a busier day.
- Everything is close. Supermarkets, sodas and the beach are all a short drive or walk, so you can be back at the pool in time for nap time.
We compare the three towns in more detail in Playa Potrero vs Tamarindo vs Flamingo.
Resort or vacation rental?
We're biased, so here's the honest version. If you want a kids' club and someone else doing all the cooking, a resort on the Papagayo Peninsula or at Conchal is a good choice.
If you'd rather have space, a vacation rental usually works better for families. You get separate bedrooms, so the kids can sleep while you sit by the pool. You get a full kitchen for picky eaters and early breakfasts, and a private pool nobody else is splashing in. For a family of four or more, it can also work out cheaper than two resort rooms.
What to do in Guanacaste with kids
- Beach days. Start with the calm beaches close to Potrero. Danta, in Las Catalinas, even has a playground on the beach.
- Get out on the water. Boat, snorkel and sailing trips leave from Flamingo, minutes from Potrero.
- Adventure parks. Our kids loved Diamante, with its ocean-view zipline and animal sanctuary. Congo Trail is a closer half day, about 20 minutes away. See our adventure parks guide.
- Hot springs and mud baths at Rincón de la Vieja. It's a long, full day, so it's better for older kids. The river tubing there is rough!
- Africa Safari Adventure Park (formerly Africa Mía), south of Liberia, with zebras and giraffes. It's an easy stop on an airport day.
- Wildlife from the terrace. Howler monkeys and iguanas are regular visitors, and kids love spotting them.
There's more in our things to do in Playa Potrero guide.
A few tips from parents
- Do one activity a day, at most. It's hot, and the pool is the highlight for most kids anyway.
- Reserve car seats with your rental car at Liberia airport, so you don't have to carry yours.
- Worried about safety? Read our parent's guide to Costa Rica with kids. Short answer: it's one of the easiest countries to travel with children.
