Costa Rica in December: Weather, Crowds and Christmas in Playa Potrero

  • Posted on

December is the start of Costa Rica's dry season, and in Playa Potrero it means sunny days in the high 80s°F, breezy afternoons and very little rain — plus the busiest, most festive weeks of the year from about December 20 into early January.

What's the weather like in Costa Rica in December?

December is when Guanacaste's dry season begins. The first week or two can still bring the odd shower as the green season winds down, but by mid-month rain is rare. Days reach the high 80s°F (around 31°C), nights stay in the mid-70s, and the hills are still green from the rains, which makes this one of the prettiest times of year.

December also brings the Papagayo winds, steady breezes from the north that make the heat comfortable. Surfers love them. They also make the ocean cooler and choppier, so snorkeling visibility can drop, though diving is often excellent, with manta rays and a chance of whale sightings. How busy is Costa Rica in December?

The first half of December is quiet and good value. From around December 20 to early January it's peak season. Costa Rican schools finish in early December, and many families use their year-end bonus (the aguinaldo) for a beach holiday, so international visitors and locals arrive at the same time. Beaches and restaurants get busier everywhere, although Potrero stays noticeably calmer than Tamarindo.

Christmas in Costa Rica

Christmas here is a family affair: homemade tamales wrapped in banana leaves, rompope (a local eggnog), nativity scenes and lights in town squares. In early December, San José holds its big Festival de la Luz parade, and El Tope, a horse parade through the capital, takes place on December 26. New Year's Eve brings fireworks on the beaches, and many Ticos eat 12 grapes at midnight, one for each month of the coming year.

  • Banks and government offices close for the holidays.
  • Supermarkets close early on Christmas Eve and open late on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, so stock up ahead of time — see our grocery guide.
  • Book Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve dinners well ahead.

Is December a good time to visit Costa Rica with kids?

Yes. It's dry, the school holidays line up, and Potrero's calm beach is ideal for young swimmers. More in Is Costa Rica Safe for Kids? and Things to Do in Playa Potrero.

How early should you book for December?

  • Vacation rentals for Christmas and New Year: 6 months or more ahead, and expect minimum-night stays.
  • Rental cars: 2–4 months ahead. Agencies run out, especially of larger vehicles.
  • Popular tours: 1–2 months ahead.
  • Best value: the first two weeks of December, when you get the good weather at lower prices.
