Stay in Playa Potrero if you want a quiet, local beach town with calm swimming and room for the family; choose Tamarindo if you want surf and nightlife on your doorstep; and choose Flamingo if you want a white-sand beach, the marina and more upscale dining. The good news is you don't have to pick just one: Flamingo is five minutes from Potrero and Tamarindo is about 30.
We're biased — our houses are in Potrero — but we spend plenty of time in all three, so here's our honest take.
Playa Potrero: quiet, local and family-friendly
Potrero is the smallest and most relaxed of the three: a residential village with a calm, sheltered bay, a sailing club, a handful of good restaurants and a real local community. The beach isn't the most dramatic on this coast, but it's swimmable, rarely crowded and an easy walk from Surfside, where most rentals are. Vacation rental rates are often lower than in Flamingo or Tamarindo, too.
- Best for: families, groups renting a house, and anyone who wants a slower pace.
- Trade-offs: nightlife is mostly dinner and live music, and you'll want a car or golf cart for bigger grocery runs and other beaches.
Is Playa Flamingo worth it?
Yes, especially for the beach. Flamingo has about a mile of light, white sand, usually gentle water and some of the best sunset spots in Guanacaste. The new Marina Flamingo is the base for catamaran tours, snorkeling and sportfishing, and the dining leans more upscale. The flip side is that it's more developed and more of a tourist enclave than a town, with condos and hotels on the hills and little local life.
- Best for: beach lovers, boating and fishing trips, and travelers who want more polish.
- Trade-offs: higher prices and less of a local feel.
Tamarindo: surf, restaurants and nightlife
Tamarindo is the busiest beach town in the area, with surf schools along the beach, a long strip of restaurants and bars, and an actual night out. It's compact and walkable, and great if you want everything outside your door. It's also the most crowded, especially from December to April, and the busiest place for petty theft.
- Best for: surfers, young groups and anyone who wants nightlife.
- Trade-offs: crowds, traffic and a much less relaxed feel.
Playa Potrero or Tamarindo with kids?
For most families, Potrero. The calm bay is easier for young swimmers than Tamarindo's surf beach, the pace is quieter, and Tamarindo is close enough for a day of surf lessons or a dinner out. See Is Costa Rica Safe for Kids? and our family-friendly beaches guide.
The short version
- Quiet, local and family-friendly: Playa Potrero.
- White sand, marina and upscale dining: Playa Flamingo, five minutes from Potrero.

Staying in Potrero, you get all three: things to do in Playa Potrero, restaurants in Potrero, Flamingo and beyond, surf beaches near Tamarindo and a big night out in Tamarindo when you want one.
